why I speak
To any student in the room, it was merely another six minutes slipping by. Little did I know that destiny’s bridge was on the brink of unfolding.
I settled into my chair and curled over my desk despondently, playing it safe by choosing three mediocre schools. After all, if I expected nothing, I couldn’t be disappointed, right?
Suddenly, I felt a presence behind me—that mix of authority and warmth every student in the building knew. My principal. He looked at my list, and with an unnerving yet caring tone said, “Come on, you’re better than that!” He pointed to a school I hadn’t dared considered—one where dignitaries sent their kids. My heart raced. Me? There?
Then he locked eyes with me, filled with unwavering faith, and said five words that echo to this day: “You can do this.”
Those weren’t eloquent. They weren’t rehearsed. They were simply timely—and they became the bridge to a destiny I couldn’t see. Months later, when my grades arrived like an answered prayer, I realized: he saw something in me I couldn’t yet see in myself.
